Counselor’s Corner

September 2017

Thoughts and Musings by Ellen Bergland, NHES School Counselor

An old “education joke” I’ve heard told many times at gathering of teachers goes something like this: Principal Brown called Bobby’s mother at the end of the first week of school.  Bobby’s behavior had not been good and the principal told Mrs. Jones she needed to come get her son at school.

Mrs. Jones reply to the Principal went something like this:

“Principal Brown, I had Bobby home ALL SUMMER with me, and I didn’t call you even one time!   Don’t you think you could handle him one week without calling me?”

That’s what we do, isn’t it? We parents and educators- we communicate!  In 2017 we email, text, dojo, and “remind”.   Some of us even still put pen to paper and write notes!  We do this because we know that it really does take all of us working together to educate children.  Parents know their children.   They know what motivates them, what scares them, what their strengths are and what they struggle with.   For 180 days, teachers have the privilege of getting to know children-teaching them, challenging them and encouraging them.   So much growth and learning can take place when teachers and parents communicate well and really work together.

So, for the children, let’s make good communication a priority this school year.  Call us, email us, text us or write us a note- and we’ll answer your questions to the best of our ability.
